General Information for The Prostate Centre Walk Run

Here's what's new for 2010 -

- The top 2 pledge collectors as of Friday, May 21st, will get a prized position aboard one of the official starting vessels for the 67th Swiftsure International Yacht Race on Saturday, May 29th.  Thanks to the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and Swiftsure 2010.

- Register online by June 1st, and get your name entered into win a chance to see movies "free for a year" from Cineplex Odeon.

- The 8 Km run will be "unofficially" timed which means that we will have a timer clock at the Start / Finish line so that you can track your own resultsTop 3 Male and Female finishers will each receive a 3-month membership at Goodlife Fitness Club.

- Look for the "Golden Walnut Award".  Yes, that's right, this year's top fundraising team will be awarded the highly coveted Golden Walnut Award.  Stay tuned for more details!

- Help build The Prostate Centre's first ever Father's Day Memorial Quilt.  We have the squares and all we need from you is to tell us why you are "doing it for dad" or brother, uncle, etc.  Call the Centre for more information.

Pledges

Collect $125 in pledges and participate for free! Please go to the Register page to register online. There will be special awards for the Top Pledge Collectors. All prizes will be awarded based on all online and offline donations turned in by Friday, June 18th, at 4:00pm.  New for 2010:  Top Team Fundraising Prizes will be based on teams of 6 (1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer!)

T-shirts

All registered participants of the 8 K and 3 K receive a souvenir “Father's Day Walk / Run” T-shirt. T-shirt sizes will not be collected when registering online or mailing in your registration, they will be distributed at package pickup. Sizes will be given on a first come, first serve basis. Available sizes are adult small, medium, large, x-large and xx-large. We will have "Survivor" t-shirts available to prostate cancer survivors and we will also have youth medium t-shirts available thanks to Out of the Blue.

Please note, if you are a team, you can have your name screened on the back of your t-shirts but you must register by Friday, May 28th.

Start

10:00 am - all distances start and finish at the Recreation Centre on the campus at Royal Roads University.  Click here for a map of the University.

Timing

The 8 km Run will be unofficially timed.  We will have a timing clock at the Start / Finish line so that you can track your own results.  Top three male and top three female finishers will be given a special prize.

Parking 8 K / 3K course

Available in parking lot located below Hatley Castle. There is NO Royal Roads Admittance Fee to participate in the Father’s Day event and Parking is free!

Race Kit Pick-Up and Registration - CHANGES FOR 2010

  • Friday, June 18th, 12 noon - 6pm - Running Room - 1008 Douglas Street, Victoria
  • Saturday, June 19th, 12 noon - 4pm at The Prostate Centre, #100, 1900 Richmond Road, Victoria
  • Sunday, June 20th, 8:00am - 9:00am at Royal Roads University.

Registration Area

Recreation Centre, Royal Roads University, 8:00 am – 9:00 am on Event day.

Prizes / Awards

We will awarding the following at the Awards/Prize Ceremony:

  • Top Collector awards will be given out to those individuals and teams that raised the most money in support of prostate cancer. For more information on these prizes/awards, please check out our Pledges & Awards page.
  • The top three male and female finishers overall for the 8km, will be presented an award
  • Five large draw prizes (very nice prizes so stick around!) will be given out. 

NOT DONE AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY! For the remainder of the draw prizes, we will have a separate table set up where you can pick up your prize or award. For the draw prizes, there will be a list with names on it of those who won a draw prize. Everyone's name also goes in for the Five Large Draw Prizes!

The awards ceremony begins at approximately 11:30 am.

"Golden Walnut Award" (What the heck is that you are probably asking?) 
Yes, this year the top fundraising team will be awarded the much coveted Golden Walnut Award!!  Stay tuned for more info in the next team update:)

Prostate Cancer Facts

... Prostate Cancer represents 34% of all newly diagnosed cancers in BC men.

...1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with the disease.  If there is a family history, the risk increases by 50%

...Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men.

...What can you do?  Visit your doctor and get an annual PSA blood test and Digital Rectal Exam.

...If caught early, Prostate Cancer has a 90% success rate for a cure!
